Journal-specific Format Adaptation

How to export figures formatted for specific journals using Licklider's built-in journal presets, and what each preset controls.

Licklider includes built-in style presets for common scientific journals. Applying a preset adjusts the figure's visual formatting — font sizes, line weights, and color scheme — to match the typical conventions of that journal family. This is different from a journal requirements validator; it applies a consistent style, but does not automatically verify that every requirement of a specific journal's author guidelines is met.

Available presets

The following journal presets are available:

Nature Applies formatting conventions used in Nature family journals. Figures exported with this preset use the font sizes, axis styling, and color palette consistent with Nature publication standards.

NEJM (New England Journal of Medicine) Applies formatting conventions used in NEJM.

Science Applies formatting conventions used in Science.

To apply a preset, specify it when requesting a figure or in the figure settings panel. When analysis intent is set to publication-ready, Licklider applies the Nature preset by default.

Export settings

When exporting a figure for journal submission, the following settings are available:

  • Format — PNG or SVG
  • Width and height — in pixels (PNG) or as scalable (SVG)
  • Scale — resolution multiplier for PNG output

For high-resolution figures (typically 300 DPI or higher as required by most journals), use the scale setting to increase the output resolution beyond the screen resolution.

The exact pixel dimensions and scale required depend on the target journal. Check the journal's figure preparation guidelines for the required dimensions.

What the preset does not cover

Applying a journal preset adjusts visual styling only. It does not:

  • Verify that the figure meets all requirements in the journal's author guidelines
  • Check figure file size limits
  • Generate figure legends in the journal's preferred format
  • Validate that statistical reporting meets the journal's specific requirements

For statistical reporting requirements, review the quality checks and disclosure status in the Inspector before exporting.
