Figure Consistency Verification
A manuscript where Figure 2 uses "mean +/- s.d." and Figure 4 uses "mean +/- SD" is not just aesthetically inconsistent —it signals to reviewers that the paper was assembled from separately prepared materials without unified quality control. Licklider verifies style consistency across all figures in a submission package automatically.
STEP 1 —The Pitfall: Cross-Figure Inconsistency
Inconsistency across figures in the same paper is one of the most reliable indicators that a manuscript was prepared by multiple people or over an extended period without unifying review. Common cross-figure inconsistencies:
- Error bar terminology. "mean +/- SD" in some legends; "mean +/- s.d." in others; "mean (standard deviation)" in a third. All refer to the same thing —but the inconsistency suggests poor coordination.
- Significance star definitions. Figure 2 defines "* p < 0.05, ** p < 0.01"; Figure 5 defines "* p < 0.05, ** p < 0.01, *** p < 0.001" —and the threshold used in the significance annotation differs between panels.
- Group color assignments. Control group is blue in Figure 1 and gray in Figure 3. Treatment group is red in Figure 1 and orange in Figure 4. A reader building a mental model of the paper must constantly re-orient.
- Font inconsistency. Axis labels are 8pt in some figures, 7pt in others. Some figures use Arial; one uses Helvetica. Subtle but visible in print.
- n reporting format. Some legends report "n = 12 per group"; others report "n = 12/12"; others report "n = 24 total." The inconsistency obscures whether the n per group is the same across figures.
STEP 2 —Journal Requirement
Nature's figure style guidelines state that "all panels within a multi-panel figure, and all figures within a manuscript, should use consistent fonts, symbol sizes, and line weights." Cell Press guidelines require that "color coding must be consistent for the same experimental group across all figures."
While journals do not explicitly reject submissions for cross-figure inconsistency, peer reviewers regularly cite it as a concern in revision letters —and it is among the items that statistical editors at Nature flag in their pre-publication review.
STEP 3 —Licklider's Solution
Input
- All figures exported in the current session (or imported from previous sessions into the same submission package).
- The applied journal preset (if any), which defines the canonical values for font size, line weight, and color palette.
Output
- Cross-figure consistency report. A table comparing the following elements across all figures: error bar terminology, significance threshold definitions, group color assignments, font size and family, line weight, n reporting format, and axis label style.
- Inconsistency flags. Elements that differ across figures are flagged with a proposed canonical value (the value used in the majority of figures, or the preset value if a preset is applied). The researcher can apply the canonical value to all figures with a single click.
- One-click harmonization. For each flagged inconsistency, a "Apply to all figures" button applies the canonical value across the entire submission package.
Guard
Guard condition —Critical inconsistency at export (advisory): Inconsistencies in significance threshold definitions (e.g., *** means p < 0.001 in one figure and p < 0.005 in another) are flagged as critical inconsistencies. Export of the submission package is not blocked, but the researcher must acknowledge each critical inconsistency before the export proceeds.
